The Story of The Twisted Granny

The Twisted Granny business is built on a lifetime love of crochet and creativity.

I learned to crochet when I was just nine years old, taught by my mother and grandmother, two women who passed down not only the skill but also a deep appreciation for handmade work. My earliest projects were delicate crochet doilies and Christening outfits for babies, made with fine #10 crochet thread.

When I first began crocheting, my family couldn’t afford yarn. Instead, I pulled threads from old clothing and used my fingers instead of a hook to create my first pieces. Even then, the spark was there.

Over the years, crochet became more than a hobby. It became a lifelong craft.

For the past 46 years, I have been working professionally in the crochet world, designing patterns and creating pieces of all kinds. Along the way I also explored many other creative outlets, including landscape painting and a variety of handmade crafts, but crochet has always been the art form closest to my heart.

In my late teens, I discovered another passion within the craft: pattern writing. What began as simple notes and instructions grew into a vast personal library of designs. Today, I have written more than 3,000 crochet patterns, each one developed through years of experience, experimentation, and love for the craft.

For me, crochet is not just about making something beautiful. It is about creativity, tradition, and sharing knowledge with others. Designing patterns brings me just as much joy as crocheting them, and through The Twisted Granny, I continue to share that passion with fellow makers around the world.

The Twisted Granny was built on more than creativity—it was built on purpose. Many of my crochet blankets begin life as prototype designs, created while developing new patterns for my shop. Once their design work is complete, these blankets don’t get tucked away or forgotten. Instead, they are donated to women and children's shelters, where warmth, comfort, and kindness are needed most. This philosophy of create with intention, give with heart is the foundation of everything I do. Crochet, for me, has always been about more than yarn and hooks—it’s about care, connection, and showing up for others in quiet but meaningful ways.

Through The Twisted Granny Showcase Blog, I share donation updates, behind-the-scenes glimpses of my creative process, and news from The Twisted Granny Shop. It’s a place for fellow makers, supporters, and anyone who believes that handmade work still matters. The blog’s personality is friendly and informative. Whether you’re here to follow the donation journey, explore new patterns, or simply enjoy the stories behind the stitches, I’m grateful you’ve found your way here.
