Covenant House is a nonprofit organization providing safe housing and comprehensive support to youth experiencing homelessness and survivors of human trafficking.

Covenant House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization founded in 1972 by Franciscan priests, including Reverend Bruce Ritter, to serve homeless and at-risk youth in New York City, later expanding across the Americas. Its mission is to provide safe shelter, food, clothing, and holistic care to young people aged 16–21, empowering them to overcome adversity and achieve independence. 

Services and Programs

Covenant House offers a wide range of services designed to address the complex needs of youth facing homelessness and trafficking:

• Residential programs providing 24/7 shelter in 34 cities across six countries. 
   
• Healthcare and mental health services, including substance use treatment and prevention. 
   
• Educational support, such as GED preparation, college scholarships, and tutoring. 
   
• Job readiness and workforce development, including vocational training and job placement. 
   
• Legal services and civil aid for youth navigating legal challenges. 
   
• Programs for young families and transitional living, helping youth develop life skills and independence. 
   
• Community engagement activities, including birthday celebrations, movie nights, and mentorship programs. 
   
  
  Covenant House’s programs are inclusive, serving all youth regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity, guided by the True Colors Inclusion Assessment and certified by Praesidium. 
   
   

Impact and Reach

Covenant House is the largest privately funded charity in the Americas for homeless and exploited youth, serving over 50,000 young people annually. In 2022, it provided 730,000 nights of housing, caring for an average of 2,000 youth each night. Its services are structured to support youth along three pathways: prevention, intervention, and restoration, aiming to end youth homelessness.

Covenant House operates in 34 cities across the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Central America, including major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Mexico City, and Managua. Each location provides a safe environment where youth can access essential services and build trust, confidence, and life skills. 

Covenant House continues to be a beacon of hope for young people in crisis, combining immediate shelter with long-term support to help youth transition to independent, productive lives.
